An Eventful Meet and Greet at Summer Crush Vineyard and Winery
by Beverly Jones, eyewitness reporter and photographer
ERAF was happy to be the Charity of the Week at (http://www.summercrushwine.com) Summer Crush Vineyard and Winery in Fort Pierce on Sunday, July 23. This type of meet and greet event gives us a chance to get the word out to new friends, and in this case, receive donations from the guests.
We brought along mini-horses Cody and Cookie and set them up under a tent in an enclosure near the entrance. They always attract a crowd and give us an opportunity to tell our story A big plus for Cody and Cookie was the luscious fresh, green, green grass under their hooves. They were very happy grazing to their heart’s content.
Bobbi Martin and Joyce Petowsky transported the “minis” in a trailer from the barn. The morning got off to a bumpy start when Bobbi and Joyce were ready to load the duo into a trailer and encountered some issues. Cody’s stifle had to be popped back into position. He has an old injury and this happens from time to time.
Undeterred by providing emergency medical care, Bobbi and Joyce travelled up to Fort Pierce and got everything unloaded and set up only to have a fast moving rainstorm wash through the vineyard and they had to repack everything.
More volunteers including Sara Johnson, Julijs and Bonnie Licis, Terry Walden and Beverly Jones arrived and helped reset the scene, greet guests, cajole donations, and sell raffle tickets.
About 2:30 pm, shortly after Marilynn and Joe Vannucci joined the team, fast moving dark and threatening clouds began to gather and head in our direction. Bobbi wisely decided to put Cody and Cookie back in their trailer for safekeeping and we gathered up the paper materials one more time and stored anything that might get damaged.
The rain pelted down with a fury and lightening strikes boomed. From our safe spot nestled on the porch all seemed fine, until, Terry shouted, “The horses have escaped from the trailer!”. Sure enough the side door had sprung open in the windy and wild weather and Cookie and Cody decided the outdoors and all that green grass looked better than being in the trailer, despite the storm.
Faster than greased lightening, Bobbi, Sara and Terry charged off into the vineyards in the pouring rain in hot pursuit of Cookie and Cody. If you think mini-horses can’t move fast, think again!
The rest of us stood by anxiously (but dry) and prayed that they would be successful soon.
Fast-thinking Julijs rounded up a staff member with a golf cart to join the posse. As the rain stopped we saw Sara leading a humbled Cody. One down, one to go! But Cookie remained at loose for another 30 minutes, providing a scenario of entertainment for the onlookers and frustration for the cowgirls.
All ended well and we packed up everything for the last time and hit the trails back to ERAF where Cookie and Cody are now safely secured.
Thanks again to Summer Crush for their hospitality, golf cart horse wrangling and an enjoyable afternoon. We have been invited back to the Summer Crush Winery on Sunday, December 10th so we hope to see you all there for a wonderful afternoon in the country!
